I have a 1.5GHz laptop and i was wondering if it would run faster than Windows XP.
At the minute it can only have two windows open before it starts to slow down and the memory is only about 40GB, would it be worth swapping?
It's mainly used for surfing the net and occasionally word processing.I'd go with Xubuntu 8.10 (latest release). It is a modification of Ubuntu with the XFCE desktop environment to work on much lower system specs than Ubuntu. It also comes with all the programs needed for a basic system, such as a decent web browser (Firefox), a word processor (AbiWord), a chat program (Pidgin), and more. You can download it, burn it to a CD, and install it easily. If you have an AMD processor, use the i386 Alternate Install CD; otherwise, you can use either the liveCD or the alternate disk.YES, Linux could probably turn a 1Mhz proccessor with 12KB of RAM into a better computer than the one u have right now (and thats not too big of an exaregation). So yeah get linux, the only thing is you won't be able to run all applications, and most games wont work, plus (depending on the type of Linux you get) you will have a less flashy Operatng System. Basically the gist is this:
You get an extremely fast and efficient system with no viruses, and no security loopholes (none that are explited to the degree windows is). You sacrifice flashyness, and some softwares for this OS. The programs however are being remade for linux as well so dont worry about that.
